Formwork engineering refers to the temporary support structures fabricated according to design requirements, enabling concrete structures and components to take shape in their specified locations and geometric dimensions, maintain their correct positioning, and withstand both the self-weight of the structure and external loads acting upon the formwork. Hollow plastic formwork is a commonly used type.
The purpose of formwork engineering is to ensure the quality and construction safety of concrete works, accelerate the construction schedule, and reduce project costs. However, certain types of construction formwork tend to deform after being used for a period of time. What are the causes of deformation in construction formwork?

1. A small steel mold was installed without being set up according to the prescribed requirements, resulting in poor overall performance of the building.
2. The foundation of the formwork is unstable; the construction formwork was not placed on a level surface, and waterproofing measures were inadequate.
3. When using wooden formwork or plywood, if the formwork is set up but concrete is not poured promptly, prolonged exposure to sunlight and rain can cause deformation.
4. The support spacing is too large, resulting in poor rigidity of the steel plate.
5. The concrete or column concrete was poured too quickly, the pouring height per batch was too high, and the vibration was excessive.

In the daily use of construction formwork on building sites, deformation of the formwork has long been a persistent challenge for builders. When purchasing construction formwork, in addition to paying attention to product quality, it’s also important to take proper care and protection during normal use.
1. When using construction formwork and its supporting systems, construction personnel must fully consider their own self-weight, the rated load capacity, and the lateral pressure generated by concrete during the pouring process, to ensure that the formwork has sufficient load-bearing capacity during use and must never be overloaded.
2. Regarding the support beneath beams, first, the spacing must ensure that the structure remains undeformed under the combined effects of the concrete’s weight and construction loads. If the base of the supports rests on a soil foundation, the soil must be compacted first, drainage ditches must be provided, and cleats and steel plates must be laid down to prevent the supports from collapsing.
3. When assembling small steel formwork, joints must be placed according to the specified requirements. The spacing and specifications of cofferdams and tension bolts shall be determined in accordance with design requirements.

4. If formwork for beams and columns uses concealed boxes, the spacing should be specified and the formwork should be securely clamped. The width of the formwork should be slightly smaller than the dimensions of the cross-section. The upper part of the formwork for beams and walls must be equipped with temporary support heads to ensure that the widths of beams and walls remain consistent during concrete pouring.
5. When pouring concrete, ensure even distribution and avoid sudden unloading. Strictly control the pouring height, especially on both sides of formwork around door and window openings. It is essential to ensure that the concrete is thoroughly vibrated and compacted while also preventing excessive deformation that could cause the formwork to warp.
6. Cast-in-place reinforced concrete beams and floor slabs with spans of 4 meters or more shall be cambered according to design requirements. When the design does not specify particular requirements, the camber height should be between 1/1000 and 3/1000 of the span.
7. When using wooden formwork and plywood formwork, concrete should be poured promptly after acceptance of the experience to prevent the wooden formwork from deforming due to prolonged exposure to rain. If you’re looking for greater convenience in use, you might consider trying plastic formwork.
